Durante años Bruce Springsteen fue legendario por la cantidad de grabaciones que no dio a conocer. Cada vez que editaba un álbum, dejaba un monton de buenas canciones fuera, no por falta de calidad, sino porque no se adecuaban a la tematica o a la atmosfera del álbum. Era inevitable que los fans y coleccionistas requiriesen estas grabaciones y durante muchos años Bruce fue junto a Dylan el Rey de las grabaciones piratas. Dylan lanzo un box set de canciones inéditas en 1991, allanando el camino para la aparición largamente esperada de una edicion similar por parte de Springsteen, 'Tracks', en 1998. Abarcando cuatro discos, no está completamente dedicado a material inédito, tambien aparecen algunas caras B. Ni es verdaderamente definitivo, ya que pasa por alto un número de tomas clave, además de la versión original de 'Because the Night', el hit de Patti Smith.
