'Bananamour' es la madurez de Kevin Ayers como compositor. Ayers se basa en un trío recién formado tras su 'Whatevershebringswesing'. Con el bajista Archie Leggett y con el batería Eddie Sparrow, Ayers selecciona artistas invitados para un puñado de pistas: David Bedford ('Beware of the Dog'), Steve Hillage ('Shouting in a Bucket Blues'), Robert Wyatt ('Hymn') y Mike Ratledge ('Interview'). 'Interview' es uno de los temas más fuertes de un álbum con melodías originales, cargado de cortesía, guitarra electrizantes, órganos y psicodélia. 'Shouting in a Bucket Blues' es un tema a caballo entre el pop y el blues, letra picante, y se convirtió en un elemento básico en concierto. 'Decadence' es la pieza central del álbum. Es un tema de música progresiva, atmosférica, muy diferente a cualquier otra cosa que habian hecho.
