Tras el intento de suicidio de Gahan y su larga recuperación de las drogas, las cosas se veían sombrías. Afortunadamente 'Ultra' les devolvió un poco de fe. La forma de cantar de Gahan había cambiado, especialmente en la maravillosa 'It's No Good', vibrante, tensa y hermosa, con una letra romántica de Gore. El tema inicial, 'Barrel of a Gun', tiene enormes golpes de batería y scratching. 'Ultra' también toca territorios más sutiles, como la escalofriante 'Sister of Night' y la suave 'The Love Thieves'. Gore canta el orquestal y bailable 'Home' y 'The Bottom Line'. Cierra 'Insight', una balada encantadora.
