La claustrofóbica 'The Fear' abre 'This Is Hardcore', ofreciendo una pista de por donde va el álbum. Incluso los temas más pegadizos están envueltos en oscuridad. 'This Is Hardcore' es decepción y miedo porque igual lo que soñaste no es lo que realmente querías. Hay loops de batería, piano lounge, cuerdas y una letra aguda que crea un aterrador monumento a la decadencia. 'The Fear', 'Seductive Barry' y 'Help the Aged', muestran el miedo a flor de piel. Otras lo disimulan con ritmos bailables ('Party Hard') o con tonos apagados ('Dishes'). 'I'm a Man' o 'A Little Soul' no son tan explícitamente oscuras. Las tres últimas canciones, 'Sylvia', 'Glory Days' y 'The Day After the Revolution', no resultan tan naturales.
