Kiss hizo un esfuerzo para volver al éxito con 'Hot in the Shade'. Hay una ligera mejora, pero no mucho. La composición todavía está desenfocada. Aun asi hay un buen sencillo Top Ten, la balada 'Forever'. Pero el resto es casi todo relleno, 'You Love Me to Hate You', 'Love's a Slap in the Face', 'Cadillac Dreams'. La única canción que canta Eric Carr en un disco de Kiss, 'Little Caesar', es uno de los pocos puntos brillantes del álbum. Desafortunadamente Carr murió de cáncer en 1991.
