En 1979, Músicos Unidos por una Energía Segura, una coalición de artistas y figuras de la industria musical que hacían campaña contra la energía nuclear, convencieron a Springsteen para que participara en una serie de conciertos que se celebrarían en el Madison Square Garden de Nueva York para recaudar fondos. Con la excepción de Bruce y Tom Petty, el cartel estuvo dominado por rockeros suaves como Jackson Browne, James Taylor y Crosby, Stills & Nash. Springsteen no pronunció ningún discurso antinuclear, pero dio a sus actuaciones una fuerza, convicción y pasión que superó a todos los demás actos del cartel y lo convirtió en el punto culminante de 'No Nukes'.
