Cuando Hiatt grabó 'Riding with the King' alguien había llegado a la conclusión de que Hiatt era un roots-rockero de corazón. La primera cara fue producida por Ron Nagel y Scott Mathews, con Hiatt cantando y tocando la guitarra y Mathews manejando todo lo demás. Sonido retro-pop denso y brillante, con teclados centelleantes y saxos trompeantes. La segunda cara fue grabada con Nick Lowe a los mandos, con melodías más austeras y bluseras, pero también un poco más relajadas. Hay rocks contundentes como 'Say It with Flowers' y 'Falling Up', emotivas reflexiones sobre el amor, como 'She Loves the Jerk' y 'You May Already Be a Winner'. 'Ridging with the King' puede ser un poco confuso, pero sin duda fue un paso en la dirección correcta para Hiatt.
